Dana Reyes on the dock at Clearwater Quarry

Who you will be diving with

Dana Reyes

Owner & Lead Instructor · certifying divers since 2009

I taught my first Open Water class at Clearwater in 2009 and I still teach every class myself — you will not be handed off to a rotating staff. Groups are capped at six because that is the number where I can still watch everyone's gauges. Most of my students are nervous on day one and diving the wreck line by the end of the season. If you have a medical question or you are worried about the mask, call me before you book; those conversations are free and they are usually short.

Where we dive

Clearwater Quarry

The same site every class, which is the point — by your first open-water dive the place is already familiar.

What people say afterward

  • I had failed a course somewhere else and assumed diving was not for me. Dana spent an extra hour in the shallow end with me on day one and I finished the certification.

    Marisol O.Open Water, June 2026
  • Six people, one instructor, same quarry every weekend. By the fourth dive the place felt familiar, which is exactly what you want when you are still thinking about your gauges.

    Trent K.Open Water, July 2026
  • Called on a Tuesday with a medical question, got a straight answer and a recommendation to talk to my doctor first. No pressure to book.

Priya N.Advanced Open Water, August 2026

Before you book

The questions people actually ask

  • I am a nervous swimmer. Can I still do this?

Usually yes. You need to be able to swim 200 yards without stopping — any stroke, no time limit — and float for ten minutes. Most people who describe themselves as nervous swimmers can do both. If you are unsure, book Discover Scuba first; it is one afternoon and it answers the question honestly.

  • What if I panic underwater?

It happens, and the whole first weekend is spent making it not happen. Every skill is practised in water shallow enough to stand up in before it is done at depth. Groups are capped at six so I can see everyone. Nobody goes deep until they are ready, and there is no schedule pressure to.

  • Do I need my own gear?

No. Tanks, weights, BCD, and regulators are included. You will want your own mask, snorkel, and fins eventually — a mask that fits your face properly makes a real difference — but rent for the course and buy afterward once you know what you like.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

We move the dive rather than cancel it. Rain is fine; lightning and high wind are not. If I call a weather hold, you get first pick of the next available date at no cost. You will hear from me the evening before, not the morning of.

  • Are there medical restrictions?

There is a standard medical questionnaire everyone completes. Asthma, heart conditions, recent surgery, and pregnancy need a physician sign-off before you can dive. Send me a message before you book if any of those apply — it is a short conversation and it is better had early.

  • How far in advance should I book?

Summer weekends fill four to six weeks out, and June fills first. If you have a trip you are training for, book with that date in mind and leave a spare weekend in case of weather.
